Jefferson Patterson ParkThe specialists from Jefferson Patterson Park have generously donated their time and patience to help us extend our research abilities. We visited the park at the beginning of the school year to kick-start our process in investigating archeological sites. A special thanks goes out to Kim Popetz and Patricia Sanford for their time and coming to the school to help us with the Curator's Choice Project.

Curator's choiceThis project is where, with the help of Jefferson Patterson Park, the class chooses an artifact to research and develp the background history. From there, the class creates a wedsite to inform the community of a piece of history from Baltimore City in the 1800s.

"The students are analyzing the contents of a mid-19th century privy from Baltimore’s Federal Reserve site (18BC27). Archaeologists excavated the site in
1980, but since the artifacts were never studied or a report prepared, the students are working with an assemblage that has never before received any
attention. Before indoor plumbing became common, small outdoor structures set over brick-lined pits served as toilet facilities for many urban households. Such pits became convenient dumping places for household garbage in the days before city-wide trash pick-up. This particular privy is filled with broken plates, spittoons, chamber pots, medicine bottles, and a torpedo bottle once used to hold carbonated beverages' - Patricia Samford
